Six-Chart Sunday (#8) – Rematch!
6 Infographics from the week + 1 interview (world-changer Mellody Hobson)
U.S. Presidential Rematches: Biden vs. Trump 2024 will be the 7th rematch in U.S. history (out of 60 Presidential elections). What the data show: Older candidates won 4 of 6; Challengers won 4 of 6; Taller men won 5 of 6. What the data prove: correlation ≠ causation.
Smallest U.S. House Majority in 70 years: With the departure of Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO-4), House Speaker Johnson now commands the smallest partisan majority since 1954, which started at 221R-213D and also shrunk to 218-213 by the end of the second session (due to deaths rather than departures).
The Middle Has Disappeared: Decades of data-driven gerrymandering, ideological self-sorting and partisan primary rules have rendered ~95% of U.S. House seats uncompetitive.
Racial Realignment in U.S. Politics?: Polls suggest non-white voters are shifting away from Democrats and towards Republicans (Nate Silver goes deeper here).
Regulation Nation: There were 233 “economically-significant” regulations under active consideration heading into the 4th year of the Biden Administration vs 138 at the same point in the Obama Administration and 119 under President Trump as his 4th year began.
ABC: Always Bet on Chocolate: So far this year U.S. Cocoa Futures prices are up 93.6%, besting semiconductor powerhouse / AI bellwether Nvidia (up 82.3%).

Could it be that Obama regs #> Bush, Biden >Trump because the GOP presidents left so many unfinished regulations-unaddressed problems? Dems are the governing party—using existing authorities to address problems? The GOP is the anti-govt. party. they don’t care if some of the required rules are left undone.
Great again Bruce. Has anyone looked at the number of elected officials resigning/not seeking re-election this cycle versus prior cycles, and the reasons over time? My perception, this cycle, is that it is precipitated by the increasing dysfunction. Just a thought.
