Is Trump winning or losing? Depends on whom you ask and what you measure.
On Tariffs. Tariff revenue hit all-time highs while shipping from China is plunging, threatening shortages and inflation.
On the Border. Unwanted illegal crossings along the southern border hit a 25- year low, while desired crossings at the northern border are suffering a severe fall-off.
On Politics. The President’s job approval fell from net positive (+11.6) on Inauguration Day to net negative (-7.3) now; but the Democratic Party’s net favorability fell further since last Fall & remains equally under water (-7.1).
On Energy. Crude oil prices have fallen since Trump inauguration (diminishing inflationary pressures) but that’s reducing incentives to drill, baby, drill.
On Trade Dealing. The newly-announced U.S.-UK trade agreement framework is the first of many trade deal “term sheets” expected over the next weeks & months. But formal trade deals take an average of 18 months to complete and 45 more months to implement, so real changes may be years away.
On Canada. While Trump’s unappreciated comments about Canada becoming the 51st state dramatically reversed the fortunes of Canada’s Liberal Party, the Liberal candidate won by campaigning to end their carbon tax, drastically increase military spending, limit immigration and “build, baby, build.” So did Trump lose or win?
